Hidradenitis suppurativa

Pathological Illustration

An educational infographic about Hidradenitis suppurativa(HS). HS is a chronic auto-inflammatory skin condition that causes lumps and abscesses to develop on sensitive areas of the body. It affects over 4% of Canadians, though the number of individuals living with this condition is likely higher due to the lack of awareness and misdiagnosis.

The goal of this piece was to contribute to HS awareness and to visualize this condition on a dark-skinned, larger-bodied woman—a population that is more likely to develop HS, yet is rarely portrayed in HS patient materials.

Preliminary Research and Studies

A tissue study and realistic study, along with background research collection was done to understand how HS affects the skin layers.

I find that working in greyscale during the layout stage helps me focus on building a good composition and contrast. I explore the use of different curved shapes and colours to frame information.

Layout and Colour

The completed illustration features a purple colour scheme to represent and honour the HS awareness ribbon.

The use of curved shapes, approachable illustrations, and clear, readable typography creates a welcoming tone for the infographic, while still respecting the sensitivity of the topic.
